Welcome to the SSBN

USS FRANCIS SCOTT KEY
Crew
Home Page
This
web site is dedicated to the men of the Key and their families, and to the 41
for Freedom FBM submarines, anyone else just would not understand. As
George Orwell wrote: "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only
because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." The
Crew List of the Key contains the names of those men.

From Greg Ott: The
picture on the home page of the Key emergency surfacing was taken in Eluthera
Sound at AUTEC during acoustic trials. The photo was taken from the deck of the
sound trials ship, not the Pulaski. I was on the boat standing OOD and we staged
the picture. The boat came up much closer than anticipated.

July 12, 2010 - I just received the below e-mail notifying us
of the passing of David Lyon III, FTG Plank Owner who rode the Key twice in his
career from 1965 - 1967 & 1971 - 1975, the last years of which he served as
COB. Our sympathies go out to Dave's family and friends. Here is the
message from Dave's son.
"My father was a plank owner from his
first time around on the Key and COB on his last. His name is David Lyon III
he was a FTG. He died in December of 2008. He reported to the Precom crew in
Nov 1965 to the blue crew. He made 2 patrols before being transferred to shore
duty. He re-reported to the Blue crew in Sept 1971, made 1 patrol and was transferred
to Bremerton for C3 conversion. He took the boat to Charleston where he made 2
or 3 more patrols on the blue crew and was COB late 74 to Apr 75 (I think). I
remember Capt Bump as well as several other former crew members. If you
could add him to your crew list I would appreciate it.
Thank You,
David Lyon IV MMCS(SS) Ret"

Christmas
in November. Jesse Sims sent in this picture taken in November 1969 of several
blue crew member having Christmas early, before leaving for patrol. Here
is Jesse's e:mail:
"The
Blue crew was always at sea on Christmas during that time period, so Sue (my
girlfriend at the time - now my wife) and her friends decided we should
celebrate early.....it was on the front page of the Norwich Bulletin...AP picked
up the story and also the Military paper. Pictured left to right are Don
Stanfield, Frank Gavigan, Jesse Sims and Greg Snell. The picture was
taken at my "snake ranch" on Laurel Hill in Norwich, CT. I
shared the "ranch" with Frank and Don, Gregg lived a few houses up the
street.

On
Day 1 of our 2010 Key reunion during a trip to the waterfront Marty Clemens
caught this great picture of the USS Harry Truman and the USS New Mexico passing
each other on Thursday, May 20, 2010. The New Mexico was returning to port
to drop off a sailor, then immediately returned to sea. The Truman was
heading out to sea. Who has the right-of-way? It looks like a mother
and her chick.
